American Press: AWOL

The Danish Cartoons of Mohammad

Have you seen the above cartoons in your town’s newspaper or your local news broadcast? How can a news report about a picture not show the picture? These are not images that have to be shielded from the eyes of children. They are typical political cartoons the skewer their subject matter. And Islam is a political ideology even if it is in religious form (standard for a 7th century philosophy.)

Remember Abu Ghraib? Prior to the pictures this story languished on the hidden back-pages of most newspapers. The military, concerned with policing its own, had already started an investigation and reported it to the press. When pictures became available, the same story was repeated for 45 days on the front pages of major newspapers. Even though one could convey the content in words, the same few pictures were constantly shown for weeks on end. Thus, the press doesn’t shy away from insensitive images when it suits their agenda. They slam it in your face over and over.

Reporting a story or conveying the words of others isn’t an endorsement of the content. We’ve seen every Al Qaeda propaganda video even though a simple statement would suffice: “terrorists make standard threats and damn America, again.” At one time it was feared that these tapes had specific words to trigger Al Qaeda cells. Still the actual footage was used. In fact, these tapes are often part and parcel of the terrorist attack intended to add humiliation after the physical attack. When broadcasting the actual footage does one not become a moral accomplice helping to complete the attack? Radio networks would never have broadcasted Tokyo Rose during WWII. Giving an excerpt is expected but disseminating the enemy’s propaganda word for word, again and again, serves little purpose except to give them a platform.

However, when it comes to propaganda or editorials against the enemy, a paraphrase or mention in passing is considered enough … for those few newspapers, networks, or internet venues that have even reported this story. Most failed to give it any attention! The cowardly press, in its Dhimmi stance, has failed at a time when its Danish colleagues are under attack. Here are the pictures from non-Dhimmi venues.

Update: The New York Post has an editorial, "Bushies Betray Free Speech," and an article, "Going Atomic Over a Comic." Compared to the Washington Post's article or articles, the NYP's report shows little sympathy. The NYP notes that "Islamic law holds that even a positive depiction of the prophet is wrong." All newspapers, except the New York Sun, refuse to print the pictures. The NYP editorial rightfully places free speech at the center of the debate.

Update2: Good editorial, in Human Events, on the hypocrisy of the press.

Hmmm

The American media worries about offending Muslims. I wonder if they fell asleep when Condi Rice was portrayed as Aunt Jemimah.

The media pulled the plug on the showing of planes smacking into the WTC. They also do not show beheading videos and Muslims desecrating bodies of the dead.

This is why alternative media is a boon.

The media won't publish anything which makes Islam look bad. In fact, the media are barely covering the Muslim outrage over the cartoons.

Had the Muslim reaction to the cartoons been a sane one, would the media have published the cartoons to make hateful infidels look bad? Probably not, because the very cartoons themselves are not in accordance with the anti-idolatry tenets of Islam. Also, some of those cartoons contain too much truth. MTP did indeed condone and even order terrorism.

So, publish something which makes infidels look bad (Abu Ghraib), but make sure that in the process, you're not publishing something offensive to Muslims.

Jason:

I am very disappointed by the reactions of the White House, the UK government, the US press, and the UK press to this important matter. They are all in a state of pre-dhimmitude!

Disgusting!

Never mind! I see my comment now. Still having problems at my site, though. Maybe one of you could stop by to my latest very short posting, "Protesting Cartoons," and see if that latest posting will accept comments.

I wasn't aware that Danish flags were so readily accessible in the Muslim world? Do they have a Jihadi supermarket where you can buy flags of other nations to burn whenever you need to recharge your Koran?

I saw one report that Danish Muslims leaders brought them to the Arab countries along with the pictures (and some extra pictures which were worse but not part of the Danish set of 12.) This was clearly organized by Muslims of Danish citizenry, if the report is accurate. In other words, the Danish 5th column is fanning the flames of jihad and trying to get the Danish gov't to grovel like a good Dhimmi.

I was just imagining some beard farmin' Arab taking a cab down to the Gaza City 7-11 to pick up some falafel and a Danish flag to burn.

"No, sorry. We all out. Buy some Corn Nuts."

If we are going to let hate crazed moslems dictate our behavior, we might as well install sharia law now and save time.

The MSM is afraid, period. The press tends to be very secular and even atheist, they just aren't willing to risk thier lives for freedom. All the more reason to support the troops, and the blogs.

Jason,
I've lost my password to the NYP and can't read the full editorial. If it's not too much trouble, could you email me the entire piece? I'd really appreciate it!

Kevin,
I did some speculating about the Blogger problems in the comment section for my latest article "Protesting Cartoons."

In the last few months, I've noticed more frequent Blogger glitches. It's damned frustrating!

Yep, that's what at stake. What right do Muslims have to dictate what appears in the Western press? NONE!

And the complaints about offense go to the smaller end of the spectrum as well. A British bar owner was forced to remove a “no porking” sign from his parking lot because it was “offensive to Islam.” Pictures of Piglet have been removed from British government offices because Piglet is allegedly “offensive to Islam.”

Artwork was removed from a gallery in Sweden because it was “offensive to Islam.” An Italian author was brought up on hate crime charges because her opinions were “offensive to Islam.”

Barbie dolls are offensive to Islam, Coca Cola labels are offensive to Islam, Burger King Ice Cream lids are offensive to Islam, Levi’s jeans ads are offensive to Islam. These are all actual news items.

I saw all of those stories in the blogosphere. Not in the msm!

Time to read again Fallaci's The Rage and the Pride.

How many subscribers to Jyllands-Posten and the other cartoon-publishing newspapers do you suppose there are in Lebanon, West Bank & Gaza, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, etc.?

The rampaging mobs are in these places have been intentionally stirred up -- this isn't a spontaneous outburst of rage, but a crisis that has largely been constructed by enemies of the West.

Meanwhile, the "official" Western response is the white flag. It's the unofficial, spontaneous response -- from blogs and some newspapers -- that is uncompromising in defense of freedom.

I suggest we put as much pressure as we can -- writein protest to the Dept. of State, write your "local" newspaper to print the cartoons (fat chance, but a good leeter-to-the-editor might make it), and write Congress. Do it now, before surrender becomes institutionalized as our official policy.

Excellent point: write!

I've written to my local newspapers which are also national newspapers:

NewYork Times letters@nytimes.com
Nypost Editorial Department letters@nypost.com
Daily News voicers@edit.nydailynews.com

Even if your letter doesn't get printed, your newspaper will know your viewpoint and they might reconsider their policy.

Write to your Senators or Congressman.

Even if your representative is not likely to embrace your viewpoint, they may hold back out of the desire not to alienate too many voters.

Write to the networks, also. I caught the last minute of George Stephanapoulos. He, Cokie, and Sam Donaldson all expressed emphatically that they would not run the pictures. I missed what George Will said.

I'm making rounds to post this...

From Ibn Warraq, who left Islam:

Best-selling author and Muslim dissident Ibn Warraq argues that freedom of expression is our western heritage and we must defend it against attacks from totalitarian societies. If the west does not stand in solidarity with the Danish, he argues, then the Islamization of Europe will have begun in earnest.

The great British philosopher John Stuart Mill wrote in On Liberty, "Strange it is, that men should admit the validity of the arguments for free discussion, but object to their being 'pushed to an extreme'; not seeing that unless the reasons are good for an extreme case, they are not good for any case."

The cartoons in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten raise the most important question of our times: freedom of expression. Are we in the west going to cave into pressure from societies with a medieval mindset, or are we going to defend our most precious freedom --freedom of expression, a freedom for which thousands of people sacrificed their lives?...

This raises another more general problem: the inability of the West to defend itself intellectually and culturally....

On the world stage, should we really apologize for Dante, Shakespeare, and Goethe? Mozart, Beethoven and Bach? Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Gogh, Breughel, Ter Borch? Galileo, Huygens, Copernicus, Newton and
Darwin? Penicillin and computers? The Olympic Games and Football? Human rights and parliamentary democracy? The west is the source of the liberating ideas of individual liberty, political democracy, the rule of law, human rights and cultural freedom. It is the west that has raised the status of women, fought against slavery, defended freedom of enquiry, expression and conscience....

There is more to the article which I've excerpted above.
